After spending decades developing niche products, which became increasingly popular, resulting in the need to make the same or similar products, hundreds or even thousands of times, I found myself creatively malnourished and exhausted.
I’ve decided to focus most of my energy on projects that are more exclusive in nature. Bespoke and one of a kind items that allow me the joy of imagining, designing, engineering and creating, from start to finish, and then drawing a line under it, and moving on to the next.
I believe this is what I’m best at, and I know it’s what makes me the happiest. As flattering as it is to know your product(s) are overwhelmingly popular, making the same thing over and over is not creatively fulfilling - at all.
I work best when I’m stressed - but stressed in a good way. I find every new thing I do very stressful, but I also find being ‘not stressed’ very boring. My goal is to find the stressed-out-sweet-spot. I want to do things that are new enough to not be boring, and I want to enjoy the stress that comes with doing my absolute best. I want to challenge myself. As a person with autism, this usually means that I become overwhelmed. The really good stuff I produce comes just on the other side of the overwhelm.
Trust in the process and you’ll reap the rewards at the end!
